Joy Matsumoto
Cadence
Five years ago, Joy and her teenage daughter volunteered at a local American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. With other mother-daughter pairs, they served dinner to participants, cleaned up after, and helped set up the Luminaria bags at sunset. Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of local chapters of the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Friends of Joy's were getting involved with the Willow Glen neighborhood relay the following year. Joy joined the "Red Hot Flashers" team, participated in the event itself and helped raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Last year, Joy was asked to join the Willow Glen Relay for Life Committee in the role of Accounting Chairperson. In addition to maintaining a commitment to the original team, she attended planning meetings throughout the year, went through ACS accounting training and handled the data entry and deposits of checks and cash for the 2008 and 2009 Willow Glen Relays. She will continue as Accounting Chairperson for the 2010 Relay. This volunteer position requires handling funds and updating the database before, during and after the event, with the greatest effort during the 24 hours of Relay. The Relay fundraising is still going on. The books won't close until the end of August and additional contributions are welcome. You can still donate to the event, the team or an individual at
